Local Market

This page includes information on flowers that are available from Donald Cymbidiums for direct sale to the local New Zealand wide market.  This sales initiative is due to the continuing weak international demand for cymbidium orchids and the absence of an effective supply chain within New Zealand for high (export) quality cymbidiums. Almost all commercial cymbidium growers in New Zealand in the past have focused on the export market and only flowers which have been of lower quality have been sold locally. As a result, rather than cymbidiums being regarded as a premium flower within New Zealand they have been regarded as a second choice option. Some florists indicated in a recent survey that they did not consider using cymbidium orchids in their arrangements as the quality was at best variable.

This page has four main components:
The first contains links to the newsletters which are to be sent out weekly to florists and other subscribers giving information on what flowers are currently available. (The link to the latest newsletter will appear immediately after these introductory comments.)

The second contains a link to an introductory letter which was sent out to florists and other interested parties explaining how the sales system works.

The third contains a link to a glossary of terms used both within the New Zealand cymbidium industry and by ourselves.  The objective of this glossary is to help ensure that there is a minimum of confusion in any sales transactions (and to help ensure that we use terms consistently between clients and over time).

The fourth contains a link to a discussion paper which looks at options for using the internet as a primary sales link for flower sales within New Zealand.
